In Team Fortress 2, players begin each round in their team’s resupply room, where they can switch classes and adjust their loadout. These rooms feature cabinets that fully restore health, replenish weapon ammo, refill item meters, and remove negative status effects. Upon death, players will wait in a respawn queue, typically lasting 5 to 10 seconds, before reappearing at their team’s most advanced resupply room. Resupply rooms can be secured by capturing control points or reaching Payload cart checkpoints, but can also be lost if the opposing team advances similarly.
The maps in the game feature various elements, including doors that may be either open or closed. Most doors can be opened by a player standing nearby, but some only open for players approaching from a particular side or for specific teams. Maps are also segmented by invisible boundaries and surfaces, with ceilings and walls that, while not visible, affect gameplay. Additionally, certain objects may seem to occupy physical space but do not affect collision detection.
Map pickups including health and ammo kits, are scattered across various locations. These items remain in place until collected and respawn after a 10-second delay. Health kits restore 20.5%, 50%, or 100% of health depending on their size, while ammo pickups replenish 20.5%, 50%, or 100% of ammo, along with a specific amount of metal. Upon death, a player drops their active weapon, which can be picked up by another player of the appropriate class, as well as a medium ammo box. If a Heavy dies with a food item like the Sandvich, that item will be dropped instead.
If players need health or ammo, they can use an Engineer’s Dispenser or return to their resupply room. These resources are strategically located in areas frequented by players looking to replenish their supplies.
